On core difficulty, he starts with a set of permanent buffs that can be dispelled. While shield isn't listed he has 2 buffs that say "Hero dispels from Playful Darkness" when dispelled. I think one of those is a shield or something that grants him immunity to missiles because after dispelling that he is vulnerable to those.
