You can lose an edge by stepping on concrete, accidentally tapping a metal part of a bench or floor drain. If they were not leveled properly they wouldnt feel like one side perhaps has an edge. A sweet stick or honing stone can only clean up the outside part of the blade. It is not made for fixing the hollow.A lot of edgework is about the knees. If you don't get down deep in the knees, you can't acquire that deeper edge - but you need to be able to control it. The deepest edges in the world don't mean a thing if you can't control them.

You can tell if hockey skates have been sharpened by examining the blades for a sharp edge. One way to check is to run your fingernail gently along the blade's edge. If it feels dull or smooth, the skates likely need to be sharpened.
